LYRICS

1. Let’s Not and Say We Did

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

When I was a kid I liked to crash my bike and dangle from the swings

But every once in a while I’d want to do some crazy thing

Mamma knew diplomacy

She knew just how to say no to me

She would smile and she would say

Let’s not and say we did

That’s half the fun of being a kid

Sometimes it’s better to pretend

And less trouble in the end

It’s late in the evening, getting kind of steamy

Your hands all over me

I’d be a liar if I said I wasn’t tempted

A little voice in my head is warning

How will I feel in the morning?

And it might get weird when I try to end it

So, let’s not and say we did

Like my mamma said when I was a kid

Sometimes it’s better to pretend

And less trouble in the end

As you go through life and you find some things that you don’t want to do

And if there is somebody trying to put the squeeze on you

Just think of my mamma and in your sweetest way

Look them straight in the eye and just say

Let’s not and say we did

Like my mamma said when I was a kid

Sometimes it’s better to pretend

And less trouble in the end

2. As We Fly

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

I guess you think I’m the untouchable one

Always one step out of reach

You’ve got this pedestal thing going on

Things are not always as they seem

No, they’re not always as they seem

Been told I’m a strong one, don’t know about that

Just made my own way in this world

I’ve got a backbone, a mind of my own

Doesn’t mean I can’t be your girl

Doesn’t mean I can’t be your girl

[Chorus]

Come take my hand and I’ll show you the way I can fly

Travel with me to the soft underside, as we fly, as we fly

We all have our demons they come from below

They can keep you from freeing your soul

Then the past swings around and slaps you in the face

But sometimes you got to let go

I won’t make promises that I can’t keep

Won’t keep my heart hidden from view

I’ll stand on the ledge and jump with both feet

And I’m ready to go there with you, ready to go there with you

[Chorus]

3. Rear View Mirror

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

Here is the story of a girl I know, you could say she was on a roll

At the peak of her career - everything was going so well

One morning she gets told, the company has been sold

Thank you for your service, it’s time for you to go

Her office fills with moving boxes, shredded files of labors lost

She just can’t shake the feeling that she’s been tossed aside

After a while she finds her way, picks her pride up off the ground

She’s looking for another road; she knows it’s time to drive

Got her hands on the wheel, foot on the gas

A cloud of dust as she speeds past

The sign ahead says welcome to the new frontier

Not much more she can say, yeah

Save the tears for another day

She’s looking at that job in the rear view mirror

In the rear view mirror.

This same girl loved a man, tried to be the best she can

Showed him all her finery, but he couldn’t make up his mind

From indecision, a choice was made, locked and loaded, tracks were laid

Dead-end street or open road, she knows it’s time to drive

Hands on the wheel, foot on the gas

A cloud of dust as she speeds past

The sign ahead says welcome to the new frontier

Not much more she can say, yeah

Save the tears for another day

She’s looking at that man in the rear view mirror

In the rear view mirror

It feels so bad when your life turns upside down

In these troubled times

Perhaps the only way you can make room for something new

Is to leave some things behind

In the rear view mirror

This same girl like all of us, doubts running through her head

They greet her in the morning, say goodnight when she goes to bed

The day of courage has arrived, things have changed but you’re still alive

And there is just no better time to set those doubts aside

Hands on the wheel, foot on the gas

A cloud of dust as she speeds past

The sign ahead says welcome to the new frontier

Not much more she can say, yeah

Save the tears for another day

It’s time to leave those doubts in the rear view mirror

In the rear view mirror

4. Daddy’s Last Drive

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

My daddy was a driving man - he drove all over this great land

He always had a Subaru - replaced it every year or two

From the West Coast to DC and all the places in between

And when the world was closing in, he would go driving

It was on Memorial Day - he was driving into town

After secret months of pain, his old heart finally gave out

He laid his head on the steering wheel and plowed into a great big field

And then the most amazing thing - the car kept on driving

[Chorus]

It jumped over a fence I’m told, went two miles and crossed a road

Down a hill, through a grove of trees and an Amish garden

He always said with a twinkle in his eye, I’m not getting out of this world alive

And he left this world in his own way- daddy’s last drive

My daddy was a self made man, he liked to do things his own way

He kept alone and to himself, he never liked to ask for help

I knew that he had a dread of dying in a hospital bed

But if he knew what he did instead, you can bet he would be laughing

[Chorus]

If you think that I am making light of a sad day

If you knew my daddy, you’d know just what he’d say

Don’t waste your tears on me; I’ve had a good long life

Now get in the car and buckle up, we’re going for a drive

Drive, drive, come on and drive

You may be wondering what happened to the Subaru

Once the body shop got paid, the silver car was good as new

It has become a legacy; my brother now has custody

And underneath the desert sun, the two of them go driving

[Chorus]

5. Blue Highway

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

Beneath the desert sun, a boy is on the run

Down roads where the curves play tricks on you

Even from the start, something set you apart

You were child with a different inner view

A parent’s ridicule, a teacher that was cruel

You took refuge in being alone

Part of you shut down, but later on was found

In the relic-laden hills where you would roam

[Chorus]

When you find your own way

The path that you travel must be true

And there’s no other road

Despite what others may expect from you

May the blue highway, the blue highway, and the blue highway

Carry you to freedom

And throughout the years I’ve watched you persevere

Even when it seemed that survival was at stake

You admired me - it was hard for you to see

At times I think I took the easy way

Looking back we never did lose track

Of the quest that binds us still

The losses and the gains as we struggle with the reins

Can’t derail the dream and never will

[Chorus]

6. From the Bottom Looking Down

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

He’s worked all his life, not prepared for this day

When nobody buys, no one is safe

He takes the news with his usual grace

The despair underneath doesn’t show on his face

[Chorus] Where am I supposed to go from the bottom looking down?

Searching for signs of hope, but they’re nowhere in this town

Do they do what they say and say what they do?

Is it just a big game of pretend?

What’s the point of walking the line

When turns out the same in the end?

The preacher comes by, says God will provide

Tell that to the bill collectors circling outside

I still go to church, try to keep my faith full

But it’s like pulling up tar from the bottom of a barrel

[Chorus]

It’s the 4th of July and all down the street

The red, white and blue floats on the breeze

Hard-working folks with an American dream

It’s not quite so clear just what that means

[Chorus]

7. Goodbye Baby

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

I’m finally over that disease,

That makes me ache and makes me shaky in the knees

I’m finally over that ailment love,

Because I know now that you’re not worth dreaming of

[Chorus] So goodbye baby, I gotta say

You tore my heart to bits, caused me some pain

But I got over you, at last I’m free

So goodbye baby, it finally doesn’t matter to me

Sometimes I ask myself, is it really true

When I think of the years that I wasted on you

And my future looks brighter now

I guess I loved you, just don’t ask me how

[Chorus]

You called to tell me that you’ve moved on

I haven’t seen you in six months; do you think that I’m a moron?

I think I get it, and it’s okay

You’re bad for me, so it’s good you went away

[Chorus]

8. My Caballo

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

I’m eight years old and I’m racing my horse through a field

My hair’s flying back and the grin on my face can’t be real

I’m feeling invincible, like I’ve discovered heaven on earth

The next thing you know I’m lying face down in the dirt

[Chorus] Hey, that’s my caballo

Mi adoro tessoro

I’m fifteen years old and working up north on the ranch

I’m out riding trails and a grizzly steps into my path

My horse whirled around and carried me down that hill in a flash

Thank heaven for horses that know how to turn on the gas

[Chorus]

Had a horse named Houdini, could untie any knot you could make

I was out riding him and decided to swim in the lake

Put my jeans on the saddle, but I should have known

I came out of the lake he was gone and so were my clothes.

[Chorus]

I’ve been lost sometimes without knowing

It wasn’t quite clear just where I was going

When you find someone who knows his way back to the barn

All you can do is drop the reins and let him carry you home

My quarter horse has seen more things than any horse should

And I had a date with a man who was up to no good

So that very morning he threw me and I broke my leg

You can think what you will, but I never went out on that date

[Chorus]

9. Crossroad

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

Standing at a crossroad, I’ve been here before

One direction is easy, the other way I struggle more

And that spirit has been calling, getting louder all the time

I just don’t want to walk away again and be asking myself why

And be asking myself why

Made a choice a while back, fourteen years I stayed away

Don’t know why I did that and I still kick myself today

There are doors not to be wasted as I scramble for lost time

Just don’t want to walk away again and be asking myself why

And be asking myself why

Had a friend who took his horse and rode from shore to shore

Now his saddle sits upon a shelf- he won’t be riding any more

Even though I am still standing, I know I’m running out of time

Just don’t want to walk away again and be asking myself why

And be asking myself why

And be asking myself why

10. You Make It Easy

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

There was a time I used to run around - one man was never quite enough

Catch and release was my adventure and you know I love to strut my stuff

Then I met you baby, and honey I can’t lie

Something strange has happened, I’m staying home at night

You make it easy, you make it easy

You make it easy yeah to do the right thing

You make it easy to do the right thing

I know you’ve got your own temptations - your allure is not lost on me

I see the ladies flock around you, like they’re the birds and you’re the tree, yeah

Let me tell you darling, I’m what you’re looking for

I’m gonna love you better than I’ve ever loved before

Gotta make it easy, I’ll make it easy

Gotta make it easy to do the right thing

I’ll make it easy, I’ll make it easy

I’ll make it easy yeah, to do the right thing

You know we can’t predict the future, don’t know what life will throw our way

But if you keep loving me the way you do, chances are this girl is gonna stay

I can tell you darling, I’ll fall without a fight

There’s no place I’d rather be than in your arms tonight

Let’s make it easy, let’s make it easy

Let’s make it easy yeah, to do the right thing

I’ll make it easy, you’ll make it easy

We’ll make it easy to do the right thing

11. The Gift

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

When I first met you, I saw the warning signs

But I ignored them, thinking it might change in time

Were your friends wondering, does she know

She is traveling down a dead end road?

If they had told me, would I have listened?

Or even recognize the gift that I was given?

Advice I would not take, I guess I’d rather make my own mistake

Believing that somehow this time it would be different

I went to a party - talking to your former girlfriend

She was as nice as she could be

I searched her eyes for useful information

Some kind of clue that she’d be passing on to me

If she had told me, would I have listened?

Or even recognize the gift that I was given?

Advice I would not take, I guess I’d rather make my own mistake

Believing that somehow with me it would be different

How many times along the way have I heard myself say

If you had only told me so, but did I really want to know?

Know, no, did I really want to know?

No, No

When I was younger I didn’t listen to my mom and dad

They tried to tell me about the pain that would lie ahead

And in my arrogance I thought, what do they know?

And now they’re not around to say we told you so

They tried to tell me, I did not listen

Or even recognize the gift that I was given

Advice I would not take, I guess I’d rather make my own mistake

Believing that somehow my life would turn out different

12. Leavin’ You

Lucy Billings (Lucy Tunes Music, ASCAP)

Leavin’ you was about the best thing that I could ever do

You’re as good for me as a kick in the head, nettles in my bed

Now I live in the woods, I laugh, I play, and I live my life alone

I feel twice as whole, don’t have the fear hanging around, dragging me down
